The Red Dress - Opening Ceremony and Smudge

The Red Dress - Opening Ceremony and Smudge In-Person

The Peterborough Public Library invites community members to take part in The Red Dress, a collaborative art installation held in recognition of Red Dress Day, the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people (MMIWG2S+).

The interactive installation will be available from April 28 to May 5 in the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Legacy Space at the Library. Visitors are invited to contribute by adding pieces of red fabric, yarn, beading, or other textiles to a collective red dress. Materials will also be provided on site for anyone who wishes to participate.
The project begins with an Opening Ceremony and Smudge with Drumming. Daily smudges will take place each morning from April 29 through May 5. The dress will remain on display after May 5 in the Legacy Space for our community to visit.

The Red Dress installation invites all community members to contribute, reflect, or simply visit. Each piece added represents a life, a story, and a shared commitment to truth and awareness. Everyone is welcome to take part.

This initiative is presented in partnership with Niijkiwendidaa Anishnaabekwewag Services Circle and the Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre, with gratitude for their guidance and collaboration.
