The Red Dress: Interactive Community Art Installation In-Person
In Canada, more than six in ten (63%) Indigenous women have experienced physical or sexual assault in their lifetime – a direct result of colonization. On Red Dress Day, and every day, we honour the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people by raising awareness of this ongoing national tragedy.
To raise awareness and pay tribute during the week leading up to the National Day of Awareness for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people on May 5, we invite you to contribute to The Red Dress, an interactive community art installation set up in the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Legacy Space.
Bring in pieces of red fabric, yarn, beading or other textiles to add to our community’s dress, or use some of the material we’ve collected for this project to commemorate the day. Together, we hold in our thoughts the families and communities who carry the weight and live with the grief of losing loved ones.
